Oxygen Access is a Foundation of Health for All

Oxygen Access is a Foundation of Health for All

As global health systems continue to evolve, medical oxygen remains one of the most essential yet overlooked elements in delivering universal health coverage. It is not just a medical commodity—it is a system-critical therapy. At Ultra Controlo, we believe that ensuring equitable, uninterrupted access to oxygen is fundamental to building resilient, people-centered healthcare systems.

The recent global health crises have underscored an uncomfortable truth: oxygen access is fragile in many low- and middle-income countries. Despite its classification as an essential medicine by the WHO, oxygen is too often missing where it is needed most—especially in rural hospitals, under-resourced clinics, and during outbreaks of respiratory illnesses like pneumonia and COVID-19.

From Gaps to Systems

As highlighted by global health advocates, oxygen should not be treated as a one-time emergency need—it must be recognized as core infrastructure. At Ultra Controlo, our approach through the ULTRAOX platform is to go beyond the delivery of hardware. We design oxygen generation systems that are built for long-term performance, optimized for energy efficiency, and supported by local capacity-building programs to ensure that systems are operated and maintained sustainably.

Infrastructure without investment in people is not a solution. That’s why we work closely with ministries of health, international organizations, and NGOs to provide training, support, and transfer of knowledge to local biomedical teams. Self-reliance is the goal—not dependency.

Sustainability, Innovation, and Equity

The push for equitable oxygen access must be linked with climate-aware and locally adaptable solutions. Our UltraGreen initiative, for example, is designed to reduce the carbon footprint of oxygen production by integrating renewable energy into plant operation—combining health outcomes with environmental responsibility.

We also believe that equity must drive innovation. Too often, life-saving technologies are designed for wealthy systems and then retrofitted for resource-constrained settings. Ultra Controlo’s systems are engineered from the start to adapt to the realities of fragile and remote contexts, where grid power may be unstable, technical support is scarce, and demand is growing.

A Shared Responsibility

The path to universal health coverage requires a clear commitment to oxygen. As global stakeholders call for stronger investment, better financing, and coordinated procurement strategies, we must all recognize oxygen as a public good and a strategic health system pillar.

At Ultra Controlo, our vision is to empower every hospital with the tools to produce and control its own oxygen supply—reliably, affordably, and sustainably. Because no patient should be denied care because oxygen isn’t available.

We are proud to be part of a global effort to shift the oxygen conversation from reactive to proactive, from fragmented to systemic, and from temporary to permanent.
